Ellis Brownfield Bur Oak.jpgJames (Jamie) Ellis started as the Natural Areas Coordinator in October 2016. From 1999 to 2016, Jamie worked as a botanist and the vegetation monitoring coordinator for the Critical Trends Assessment Program at the Illinois Natural History Survey. He earned a B.S. in Ecology, Ethology, and Evolution from the University of Illinois and a M.S. in Resource Ecology and Management from the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan. He is very familiar with Midwest flora as well as plant communities, habitats, and fauna found throughout Illinois and nearby states. Research interests include ecology, restoration, and reconstruction of tallgrass prairie. Photo location: base of old bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) in Brownfield Woods.

Nathan Hudson started as the as the Natural Areas Research Specialist in July 2017.  He received a B.S. in Environmental Biology and a M.S. in Biological Sciences from Eastern Illinois University.  For his graduate work, he modeled red-headed woodpecker nest success using an information-theoretic approach.  He previously worked as a restoration technician for the Kane County Forest Preserve District and as a natural resources technician for the Champaign County Forest Preserve District.  Prior to working for UI Natural Areas, he was a stay-at-home father for three years looking after his young daughter and son.  His wife is a Physician Assistant at Carle in Urbana.
