Chris Whelan, the sole representative staff member of INHS stationed at the United States Forest Service Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, conducts research, aids in monitoring, and contributes outreach services for the Forest Service at Midewin. As Adjunct Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Whelan also serves as the INHS and USFS liaison to the LEAP Fellowship Program at UIC, a National Science Foundation funded graduate training program. Whelan focuses primarily on bird ecology at Midewin and elsewhere in NE Illinois. With Brenda Molano-Flores (INHS) and Miquel Gonzalez-Meler (UIC), he also oversees a project documenting soil seedbanks and the potential for prairie restoration to serve as a carbon sink to offset human carbon emissions to the atmosphere.
