Investigating Mussel Communities In Illinois Wadeable Streams

In 2009, we began collecting mussel community data in wadeable streams throughout Illinois in conjunction with the statewide IDNR and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's (IEPA) comprehensive basin monitoring programs. Our data adds a mussel component to the program that currently includes water and sediment chemistry, instream habitat, and macroinvertebrate and fish indices. These surveys also provide baseline data for future monitoring of freshwater mussel populations on a local, regional, and watershed basis. Funding from the US Fish and Wildlife Service State Wildlife Grant (SWG), Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), and the Illinois Natural History Survey supports this study.

Technical reports summarizing our findings are listed below.  Click the title to access the report.  For best results, let the page load completely before browsing within the document.  If you have difficulty downloading the document, please email Alison Stodola (alprice@illinois.edu).

Our latest endeavor has been to establish expectations for mussel populations in Illinois, and creating current distribution maps was useful product.  Click the title to access distribution maps, organized alphabetically by species, for mussels in Illinois.

Current and historical distributions for freshwater mussels in Illinois

These distribution maps and additional information collected during our basin surveys enabled us to provide a Status revision and update for Illinois' freshwater mussel Species in Greatest Need of Conservation.  This information will be used to update the mussel portion in the 2015 revision of the Illinois Wildlife Action Plan.
